Man admits sexual offenses involving children at youth camp

Courtroom illustration Legal proceedings
The accused pleaded guilty to 17 criminal counts at the judicial center on Friday

An individual who spiked candy with tranquilliser and distributed them to minors at a summer program in Leicestershire has admitted sexual offenses against two boys both between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight youngsters and an older person fell ill at Stathern Lodge in the summer month.

The elderly man, from that region, admitted guilt to a multiple criminal counts when he stood at the judicial center on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he disputed one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was concerning a nine-year-old boy.

The accused was remanded in custody before a further hearing on 28 November.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, outlined Ruben's offending to the court.

She stated his targets were under-privileged children who were attending a youth camp which he managed.

Ruben played a "sweet game" with the children, the legal counsel stated, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and ask them to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She stated to the judge the defendant had conducted this practice with the children "for many years", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She said Ruben had been able to explain this repeatedly as the children being "overexcited from fun", until his stepson had concerns in summer 2025.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "This year his stepson had worries about the situation, with valid cause.

"They chose" to examine in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC stated objects including lubricant, petroleum jelly and medical needles were discovered, and his family member alerted the law enforcement about his worries.

She explained the defendant proceeded to engage in the "treat game" with six boys that time - that Saturday - and they were all ill the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not responded by that time," she stated further.

The police watchdog, the police conduct office, previously told that it was investigating law enforcement's management of the situation.

Mrs Prior said the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so Ruben's stepson contacted the law enforcement again.

She explained Ruben then engaged in the "sweet game" in a room of five children.
